Painting is defined as the expression of ideas and emotions with the creation of aesthetic (pleasing in appearance or attractive) qualities in a two-dimensional setting. Studies have since stated that painting can be therapeutic and beneficial to the mental anatomy of the human body.
Although I do not consider myself an artist, I do enjoy painting as a simple yet effective way to help me relax and relieve stress. I like participating in monthly sessions of “Sip and Paint.” It is an intimate event where people gather to drink wine or non-alcoholic beverages and paint a sample with the guidance of a professional artist. One does not have to be very skilled at painting, only enthusiastic, and able to follow instructions.
I usually find that, while I am concentrating on getting the painting right and drinking my favorite wine, my mind is no longer obsessed with the situations which once made me feel depressed or overwhelmed. Painting helps me to express myself as I channel my anger and sadness as energy into whatever piece I am working on, and it helps a great deal. Also, socializing with the other participants can be a lot of fun and refreshing, as the informal setting is easy to make new friends and acquaintances. Painting makes me feel creative as I dare to mix colors and try different techniques, which the artist teaches to me.
At the end of the day, after I have accomplished a painting, I feel more relaxed, self-confident and positive as I am encouraged and appreciative of the beauty of the world around me and the quality of work which I have produced rather than my problems.
